The old story tells us of the origin of oilskin, and how hardy sailors from the 1800s waxed their old cotton sails to make capes to protect them from the weather. Oilskin consists of a cotton base cloth impregnated with paraffin wax making it naturally breathable. Build up of heat inside a garment melts the wax allowing excess heat to escape, the wax then sets sealing the wearer from the elements. The breathability of oilskin is unparalleled by other less expensive fabrics.
